Closing on the Striker

10 suggested reps
Origin

A closing sequence from the sen no sen tradition - moving at the same instant the opponent decides to move, so their strike lands in the space you just left.

Purpose

Cross the danger zone against a puncher and secure a controlling tie.

The Walk-through
01

A striker owns the outside. Cross their danger zone in one continuous motion: no stutter step, no test punch.

02

Time your entry to their exhale. On the exhale, their next combination is a beat away, and that beat is your window. Post your lead hand high, palm out, covering the temple and the jab line.

03

Enter behind the shield, chin tucked, hips low. Attach at the elbow, not the wrist. Wrists slip; elbows control the shoulder, and the shoulder controls the punch.

Key Points
  • 1Move on their exhale
  • 2Post the lead hand high
  • 3Attach at the elbow, not the wrist
Common Mistakes
  • Entering on the inhale - you meet a loaded punch
  • Reaching low; they punch over your posted hand
  • Grabbing the wrist and letting them re-cock
  • Stopping in the pocket without committing to a tie or an exit
When to Use
Against a boxer or kickboxer at rangeWhen your best chance is closing the fight, not tradingAny moment their combination pauses to reset
