Hidden Elbow

10 suggested reps
Origin

Close-range empi-uchi refined so the weapon never leaves the frame of your body - the strike your opponent's peripheral vision cannot register in time.

Purpose

Deliver a close-range elbow that stays inside their field of view without warning.

The Walk-through
01

The hidden elbow starts as a conversation. Hands up, palms open, nothing threatening.

02

The strike begins in the hips. Rotate the ribcage sharply toward the target and let the elbow travel on that rotation. The arm does not swing; it is carried, staying inside your silhouette until the instant of contact.

03

Kime happens at impact, then the elbow returns on the same arc. One breath, one strike, one recovery. If you feel yourself winding up, abandon the technique and choose another.

Key Points
  • 1Rotate the ribcage first
  • 2Keep the elbow pinned to your line
  • 3Recover on the same arc
Common Mistakes
  • Cocking the elbow away from the body - announces the strike
  • Punching with the elbow instead of rotating with the trunk
  • Leaving the elbow extended after impact - telegraphs and unbalances
  • Forcing the shot when the angle isn't there
When to Use
Inside the pocket where a punch has no roomAgainst a clinch attempt where hands are already occupiedAs the second beat after an ear drag or shoulder check
