Shrimp Escape

15 suggested reps
Origin

The oldest movement in ground defense: create hip space, and every escape becomes possible.

Purpose

Create the angle and space needed to stand back up or move to a safer position.

The Walk-through
01

From the frame, post your top foot flat on the ground and drive off it. The push is horizontal: you are creating space, not standing up.

02

As the foot pushes, your hips travel backward and away in an arc. Shoulders stay planted; only the hips move.

03

The gap is your window. It is enough to reinsert a leg, begin a stand-up, or fire a kick. Chain three shrimps if space allows; each one buys inches, and three of them buy the distance to your feet.

Key Points
  • 1Post the top foot
  • 2Push off, don't sit up
  • 3Shrimp your hips away, not your shoulders
Common Mistakes
  • Sitting up instead of shrimping - invites a top-position pin
  • Pushing with the arm instead of the leg
  • Moving shoulders and hips together - no space is actually created
  • One shrimp and quit; three in sequence is the standard
When to Use
Any time you are on the ground with pressure closing inAs the setup for a technical stand-upBefore every counter - space precedes offense on the ground
