Jacket Shield

Origin

A soft-tool defense taken from historical civilian karate - the coat, the sash, the towel - anything with mass and length becomes a bridge between you and the threat.

Purpose

Use a folded jacket to intercept and redirect an incoming attack.

The Walk-through
01

Fold the jacket in half over your forearm, hem hanging free. A wrapped hand cannot release; a folded drape can be dropped, thrown, or repositioned instantly.

02

When an attack comes, meet the wrist, not the weapon. The wrist is the pivot, and controlling it neutralizes whatever it holds.

03

Redirect to the outside line on contact. The jacket cushions the impact and blinds their view of your other hand, which is already moving to counter. Drop the jacket the moment it has served its purpose.

Key Points
  • 1Fold, don't wrap
  • 2Meet the wrist, not the weapon
  • 3Move to the outside line
Common Mistakes
  • Wrapping the fabric around your hand - you cannot let go
  • Reaching for the weapon instead of the wrist
  • Standing on the centerline while parrying
  • Refusing to drop the jacket once distance is bought
When to Use
Any surprise attack when a coat or shirt is in handAgainst an object-based threat at conversational rangeAs a screen while you create distance or move to cover
