The Decision Made Before the Fight

Reading Reps: 2 suggested
Origin

A principle drawn from law enforcement and military survival research: the people who live through violent encounters almost always decided in advance that they would act.

Purpose

Pre-commit to act so hesitation does not decide the outcome for you.

The Walk-through
01

Violence collapses time. In the first three seconds of an attack, there is no room for a moral debate; whatever you decided long before is what you will do.

02

Sit with the hard questions now, in the quiet. What will you do if someone grabs your child? Steps between you and your spouse? Puts hands on you? Answer honestly, and answer today.

03

The decision itself is the technique. Rehearse it until it becomes reflex, so when the moment comes your body moves while your mind is still catching up.

Key Points
  • 1Decide today what you will and will not tolerate
  • 2Rehearse the decision so it fires before thought
  • 3Action beats analysis in the first three seconds
Common Mistakes
  • Assuming you will 'know what to do' in the moment
  • Making the decision emotionally instead of prayerfully
  • Deciding to act but never rehearsing the action
When to Use
Before you ever need it - long beforeAs part of nightly reflection and prayerAny time your circumstances change: new home, new family, new job
