Side Headlock Choke Escape

12 suggested reps
Origin

A staple defense across judo, jiu-jitsu, and reality-based curricula: the side headlock is common in street violence and predictable in its structural weakness.

Purpose

Break free of a standing side headlock choke before your air runs out.

The Walk-through
01

The first job is your airway. Bury your chin deep into the crook of their elbow. A tucked chin borrows seconds and buys you the space to work.

02

Drop your base low and step the near foot out to break their hip line. Their strength was standing above you; the moment you drop, that strength collapses.

03

As their base breaks, drag their near arm down and across their body. Your head slips free, you emerge behind their shoulder, and you finish with a shove or exit. Do not stand and trade - move to distance.

Key Points
  • 1Tuck the chin into the crook of their elbow
  • 2Drop your base and rip the hip out
  • 3Arm-drag their near arm off your neck
Common Mistakes
  • Trying to stand tall against a stronger opponent's grip
  • Grabbing the wrist without dropping the base
  • Standing in place after the escape instead of creating distance
When to Use
A grab-and-hold assault from the side - very common in street incidentsBar or crowd altercations where an attacker latches onAs the standard drill for any close-range grabbing threat
