Wrist Peel & Counter

14 suggested reps
Origin

A grip escape built on the principle that every hold has a weakest structural line - for a wrist grab, that line is always the thumb.

Purpose

Free the wrist and immediately convert to a controlling position.

The Walk-through
01

Most people pull straight back against a wrist grab. The grip was built to defeat that. Instead, move against the thumb, the weakest joint in any grab.

02

Rotate your elbow toward the floor as you draw your hand to your centerline. The peel is a smooth spiral that ends with your hand free and your elbow tight to your ribs.

03

Step through with your rear foot into the space their arm just occupied. You are now on their outside line with two free hands. Convert immediately with a palm, elbow, or clean exit.

Key Points
  • 1Attack the thumb line
  • 2Rotate the elbow down
  • 3Step through as you free
Common Mistakes
  • Pulling against the four fingers instead of the thumb
  • Keeping the elbow high, giving them leverage back
  • Peeling without stepping - you free the hand and remain in danger
  • Freezing after the escape instead of counter-attacking
When to Use
A single-hand wrist grab from the front or sideThe moment a stranger reaches for your arm at close rangeAs the first beat of a longer control sequence
